How to Simplify Your Wedding Reception Seating Plan

The seating plan for an upcoming wedding reception can cause a lot of headaches, from trying to fit personalities that will go well together to keeping those that may clash apart.  The pressure is on to design a seating plan that will suit everyone.  At times it may seem like putting together the seating chart is nothing short of rocket science.  However, there are actually some tricks to make this planning a little easier.

Separating Bride and Groom Sides

One of the first questions that you need to decide is if there will be a well-defined side for the bride and one for the groom.  There are many advantages to keeping the sides separated, as these guests will be those that already know one-another.  This will make for easier, more relaxed conversation.  Of course, there are times when there may be a family riff that should be considered, separating member that may not get along.

Friends and other invitees should be assigned seating based on how they know the couple or the bride and groom individually.  For example, college friends should sit together since they most often are already acquainted.  Taking the time to think this through and plan to seat guests together that already know one another can make the event much more comfortable for everyone.

Assigning Seats or Tables

It can be tempting to allow guests to seat themselves at the wedding reception.  This tactic can easily backfire, with stray seats at a table and groups that are not able to sit together.  For a larger reception, over 75 guests, assigned seating will take a lot of the hassle out of settling everyone during dinner.  And let’s be honest, it isn’t unusual for a guest to discreetly swap a seat at a table to sit next to a friend.  This is to be expected and can actually be beneficial for everyone.

Taking the time during the wedding planning to put some thought into the seating can ensure that the reception is a great event not only for the bride and groom, but for their guests as well.
